How to use the job revenue calculator?
Start by choosing your industry from the bottom left column. After pressing on any industry name, you’ll see a slight change of colors on the map to your right. That map shows where the Workiz app measured the revenue of those jobs.
Press or hover over any of the colored states to see the measured job revenue. Generally, you’ll see that bolder colors signify higher income than in states cloured more brightly.
Also, pay close attention to the upper bar – as it shows the ranging job revenue per every industry across different states. Naturally, the number appearing on the far left is the minimum job revenue, while the far right shows the maximum.
To see the average general revenue per job, check out the number appearing next to the name of each industry. Note that the list is descending – which means that the sectors at the top generally show more revenue than the ones at the bottom.
What should I look into?
We suggest you ask yourself the following questions:
1. Do I provide a service with a high job revenue?
Is the service that your business provides included in the top five of our list? If not, consider if there’s a demand for one or more of those services in your state and how you can obtain the skills necessary to provide them.
2. Am I charging according to the average in my industry and state?
If you’re an experienced and high-valued professional, then perhaps you should increase your rates.
3. Should I provide other types of jobs?
Some field services jobs (such as junk removal and snow removal) have a low entry barrier. If the average job revenue for these jobs is relatively high, perhaps your team can perform them too. Also, if we don’t have data for the job revenue in some states – it could mean that there are barely any professionals doing this job who use Workiz (or that there’s no demand, but it’s worth finding out).
4. Should I provide services in other states?
Are you living next to the border with a state that pays more for the service you provide? Consider extending your commute for bigger pay.
Some interesting insights to check out first
1. The better the pay, the lower the competition
Many of the top paid services on our list are only available in five states or less (the data for restoration, for instance, is only available in Iowa). That could suggest high demand and low supply compared to other industries.
2. A low entry barrier doesn’t mean less income.
Painting clients pay, on average 663$ more than on pest control, though the latter requires training and obtaining a license. Also, gutter work pays, on average, $1,308 more than electrical work, which requires the professional to have a certificate. That only emphasizes that job revenue is a matter of demand, not education.
3. Similar jobs have different pay.
If your business provides primarily electrical work, perhaps you should offer HVAC work as well since it pays $589 in average job revenue. If you’re into tree care, consider offering landscaping – where you’ll get $356 on average per job. If you provide carpet or window cleaning services, know that you can earn more by providing general cleaning services and so on.
4. Seasonal jobs don’t always pay out.
Snow removal and pool cleaning, offered primarily in winter and summer, are paid less than jobs provided year-round. Those are nice gigs to offer when times are tough, but they shouldn’t replace services that are always in demand and have better compensation.
